Astoria II Combined Cycle Power Plant CompletionOctober 6, 2011 – ESS Group is pleased to announce the successful completion of a multi-year assignment providing on-site compliance coordination and remediation oversight services during the construction of the Astoria II 550-MW Combined Cycle Power Plant (AEII) in Queens, New York City. ESS provided these services to SNC-Lavalin Constructors Inc. (SLCI), the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction contractor on the project. ESS Environmental Coordinators were on-site throughout construction of the plant to perform daily environmental monitoring and compliance inspection duties ranging from stormwater management to noise measurements and air monitoring. Remediation oversight provided by ESS included managing the handling and disposal of over 100,000 tons of contaminated soil and 500,000 gallons of impacted groundwater. ESS prepared all written environmental plans to ensure the construction activities were in compliance with the New York State Article X Certificate, federal/state/local permits, and other applicable regulations. During the course of the project SLCI obtained certification under the ISO 14001:2004 standard for Environmental Management Systems, which included an ISO audit at the Astoria II project site. Following this audit, the ESS On-Site Environmental Coordinators were specifically cited by the auditor for their positive contribution to the environmental management systems in place at Astoria II.
Commenting on news of the ISO Certification, SLCI Manager for Sustainability and Environment Rowena DeFato stated, “This is quite an accomplishment for us – one that we have been working toward for two years. The work and dedication that ESS staff have shown allowed our Site Management team to focus on the construction project without worrying about impacts to our certification efforts. The AEII project and our ISO 14001:2004 Certification effort has been a true partnership with ESS.”
