ESS Group, Inc. conducted scientific research and field investigations as part of a program to determine the effectiveness of the Towns’ current chemical pesticide application and water quality management programs. ESS developed Straits Pond management recommendations based on monitoring results, field observations, and previous knowledge of the Pond and its watershed to be included in a Management Plan for the Pond.
ESS monitored midge larvae distribution and population in Pond sediments prior to and following Abate application and over the course of the year. ESS also designed a program to monitor adult midges leaving the water column and trained local volunteers to collect and enumerate samples. Additional investigations include water quality monitoring and a survey of aquatic vegetation, including algae, over the Pond surface. The long-term goal of the monitoring plan is to evaluate the effectiveness and need for future pesticide application, as well as to evaluate alternative pond watershed management options.
ESS also assisted the Towns with the preparation of grant applications for the implementation of in-pond and watershed improvement projects, and completed designs and related bid documents for two constructed wetland storm water best management practices (BMPs).
