Environmental Management Plans Add Value

Environmental Management Plans organize a facility’s environmental needs and programs in a comprehensive manner. Since most facilities already have effective environmental compliance procedures in place, this does not require an entirely new program. Instead, Environmental Management Plans are tools that help ensure coordinated scheduling, documenting, and updating of environmental compliance activities. They promote environmental performance by clearly assigning responsibility and requiring regular re-evaluation of facility practices and processes. Some companies use Environmental Management Plans as a first step towards eventual development of an Environmental Management System for ISO 14000 certification.

Components of Environmental Management Plans

Environmental Management Plans are flexible documents voluntarily developed by companies to manage environmental performance. There are no specific requirements, but a comprehensive plan typically contains:

  • Statement of purpose and commitment to environmental management
  • Detailed identification of facility processes and potential environmental impacts
  • Environmental regulations and regulatory requirements applicable to facility operations
  • Roles and responsibilities for implementation of environmental compliance activities
  • Performance goals, including goals for voluntary improvement, as applicable
