I have been very pleased with each of the projects I have worked on with ESS. From training volunteers in the field to lab work to filing Notices of Intent for lake management projects, all have gone perfectly. The deliverables have always been very thorough, professional, and well-crafted, leaving little room for comment. I look forward to our next project.

Macroinvertebrate SamplingESS natural resource and ecological services are provided on most of our projects. We have conducted field surveys, prepared impact assessments and permit applications, developed restoration plans, and implemented comprehensive monitoring programs. ESS’s core natural resource and ecological services range from wetland assessments, fisheries and benthic surveys, and vegetation and wildlife habitat evaluations to threatened and endangered species investigations and environmental permitting.

Our comprehensive natural resource and ecological services include:

  • Avian and Bat Surveys and Monitoring
  • Rare, Threatened, and Endangered Species Surveys
  • Wildlife Habitat Evaluations
  • Wetland Delineation and Functional Assessments
  • Vernal Pool Studies
  • Aquatic Habitat Restoration
  • Macroinvertebrate Sampling and Analysis
  • Fish Surveys
  • Clean Water Act Section 316(b) Compliance
  • Impingement and Entrainment Studies
  • Vegetation Surveys and Mapping
  • Submerged Aquatic Vegetation Surveys
  • Watershed and Water Quality Assessment
  • Natural Resource Damage Assessments
  • GIS Analysis and Mapping
  • Data Analysis and Reporting
  • Environmental Impact Documents and NEPA Compliance

Expertise Across Terrestrial, Aquatic & Marine Environments

ESS offers staff with expertise in wetland science, soil science, hydrology, wildlife ecology, benthic ecology, and marine biology and have experience encompassing rivers, streams, lakes, ponds, freshwater and tidal wetlands, estuaries, and marine environments. From identifying baseline resource conditions necessary for assessing project development impacts to supporting resource management decisions of federal and state agencies, our team of ecologists and environmental scientists provide complete support related to natural resources and ecology.

Field Surveys & Monitoring

ESS has designed and implemented hundreds of natural resource and ecological field surveys and monitoring programs. These programs have been used to establish baseline conditions, monitor potential impacts during construction of a project, measure the success of restoration activity, and demonstrate compliance with permit conditions or regulatory requirements. The survey plans and protocols for these programs are typically developed in consultation with regulatory agencies to ensure that field work is conducted in accordance with accepted standards and methods. This upfront coordination also ensures that surveys meet regulatory agency expectations across jurisdictions for use in evaluating project impacts.
